Explain how a public service company operates differently to a commercial company. Use an example to support your answer?
A public service company operates differently to a commercial company because a PSC doesn’t allow product placement in their programs because they don’t advertise brands. However, a commercial company allow adverts during their shows because they make their
revenue by getting paid by companies trying to promote their product.

BBC is a cross media organisation which means that it is vertically and horizontally
integrated.
Vertical integrated: When a media company has the ability to control the production (pre, prod, post), distribution and exchange (consumption/exhibition) of a product.
Horizontal integration: In which a media company has a number of subsidiary companies that are used to support the marketing of its products.
BBC Case Study: Doctor Who
- There is a blog post on the website explaining what the fans should expect from the show.
- It is horizontal integration because it allows people to engage with the product and is shown on BBC1 and on the BBC iPlayer.
- Engaging with the audience because it shows a video from the current main character.
- A wallpaper that the fans can use for free, so it is BBC giving merchandise to their fans and it is print media art from the show as it includes monsters that are in the show.
- Clips that can be shown by BBC on their social media pages.
- So, Doctor Who can be advertised across a range of different media via horizontal integration.
- Online social media services through the BBC website, twitter feed, Instagram and Snapchat.
- Print media and print advertising through the radio times magazine publication and they have their own Doctor Who magazines.
- A range of different merchandise that are available for fans to buy.
- They advertise their own products on their website to entice fans into other programs.
- Its interactive, allowing fans to watch trailers and learn more about Doctor Who Franchise. Full episodes are available via a link to the BBC iPlayer.
Synergy: Companies that are both vertically and horizontally integrated are able to create synergy across their output.
This means that they are able to promote their output- for example, Doctor Who- in an efficient and profitable manner, whilst at the same time creating a recognisable brand.
Advantages of Horizontal Integration:
- More exposure for every company involved.
- Create a product with cross media outputs.
Disadvantage of Horizontal Integration:
- Profit is spilt between all of the business involved
Advantages of vertical Integration:
- If product sell well then, the one funder will get all of the profit.
- No one else interfering with your ideas.
Disadvantages of vertical Integration:
- If product isn’t successful, then you would have lost a lot of money.
- All the ideas can be the same and monotonous and lacks in originality
